The Online Writer’s Best Friend

Hi there you follower-reader you!

I do appreciate you coming in on this beautiful day. I do hope it is beautiful for you too.

Since you’re here, I have something to share with you.

It’s something that has improved my writing in numerable ways in the past few months. And I mean in many quantifiable ways.

Well, at least in discernible ways. To the observant writer. But I digress…

I’m talking about my daily best friend online, 750words.com.

It’s an online service that basically prods you every day, every morning, to get up and start your day right – that is, by writing your first 750 words that day.

You can use it for journaling, free-forming, honing your craft… heck, even anger management if that’s what you need. (After all, as Julia Cameron so aptly says “it’s best to leave your drama on paper”).

I love it because of its simplicity and its consistent ability to coax some writing out of me even when I don’t exactly feel like it. With Facebook connect and daily reminders, it’s just so darn convenient.

Beyond just being cute, cuddly and lovable like a kitten in the morning sunshine… it’s got one other secret weapon: STATS, GLORIOUS BLEEPIN’ STATS!

And I don’t mean just dreary, old, cut’n’dried word counts and other snooze-inducing stats… REAL stats that actually mean something to the writer.

Let me give you an example. Here’s a ‘before’ picture:

How my writing used to be, starting out in the mornings

And here’s the ‘after’ shot:

How my writing has changed doing this (well almost) daily

See the big bleeping difference? If you know effective writing from a bar of soap, I bet you do. Think that’s made a difference to how much quality work I get done every day? You bet it has.

It doesn’t even end there. 750words.com boasts a veritable ORGY of STATS after you get done every morning (which is a nice motivation in and of itself, propelling you to improve your output). Things like:

  • Movie-like content rating (my worst days have been decidedly NC-17…)
  • The dominant emotions coming out of the text
  • What you’re mostly concerned about in the writing (often not what you think!)
  • Time orientation – the past / the present / the future
  • Primary sense modality – sight / hearing / touch
  • Who are you writing to or about – I / us / you / them
  • The words most frequently used (arranged in a tag cloud kinda thing)

So yeah, it IS great. Have I done a good job selling this thing to you? Good, because it doesn’t cost a thing.

Nothing but your willingness to get off your butt every morning and write those darn 750 words.

It DOES get easier as you continue, mind you. Even if at first it feels like that annoying friend from your past who just won’t take a clue and stop calling you. And texting you. And Facebooking you. 😉

I dare you to try it and not improve your writing in the next 30 days!

Hmmm… Makes me think… This may work just as well for video content?

Like, every day, record a 5 minute video, even if you don’t use it for anything at all…

    Nice one!

Gideon, you would know best but that does sound like a fantastic idea!

So that’s a cue for someone to do a video version of 750words.com.. but of course it works just by.. doing it. 🙂

  • […] 1. First off is 750words.com – my favorite tool to get those first words of the day flowing nicely. Sure, pen and paper is still the number one but this gets pretty darn close. Check out my writeup from a few months back over here. […]
